Signing in with Google

For anyone using the Google button — what it does, what EVVA asks Google for, and the refusals people hit.

Press Continue with Google on the sign-in page, or Sign up with Google on the sign-up page. Google asks you to approve, sends you back to EVVA, and you are signed in. If you have never used EVVA before, that first Google sign-in creates your account.

Google sign-in is fully available on EVVA today.

What EVVA asks Google for

EVVA requests your email address and nothing else — no name, no profile, no picture. Your Google password never reaches EVVA, and no Google token is ever handed to your browser.

Finish it in the tab you started in

Start the Google sign-in in one tab and finish it in that same tab. Opening Continue with Google in a second tab breaks the first one: the second attempt replaces the first, and the original tab then fails with Sign-in could not be completed. It is not a fault with your account — start again, in one tab.

You also have about 10 minutes to finish once you press the button. Leave it longer and you get the same message.

”This email is already registered with a password.”

You see this when the Google address you signed in with already belongs to an EVVA account that was made with a password. EVVA will not hand that account over to Google on Google’s word alone — that is deliberate, and it protects the account.

The full message is: This email is already registered with a password. Sign in with your password, then connect this provider from your account settings. The button reads Sign in with your password.

Retrying the Google button will not change the answer.

Do what the message says, in that order: sign in with your password first, then connect the provider from your account settings. Until you do, signing in with your password is a full sign-in and nothing about your account is limited. See Connected accounts and where your settings live.

”Sign-in could not be completed”

The page reads: The link may have expired, or the sign-in was cancelled. You can try again. One message covers every way a sign-in attempt can go stale — expired, already used, started in a different browser, or a second tab taking over.

Press Back to sign in and start again. If it happens every time:

  • Check that your browser is not blocking site data or cookies for EVVA. Google sign-in cannot complete without them, and a blocked browser fails with this exact message.
  • Safari private browsing and similar modes are the usual cause.
  • Signing in with your email and password works in those modes.

If you declined the request at Google, you get Authorization was declined instead. Press the button again and approve it.

If Google itself is unavailable

You may see Sign-in provider is unavailable, Sign-in provider returned an unusable response, or a message asking you to retry shortly. Those are about the connection to Google, not about your account. Wait a moment and try again, or sign in with your email and password.

The buyer app also shows Google sign-in is unavailable right now. Please use your email and password. if the sign-in cannot even be started.

A Google-made account has no password

If your account was created by signing in with Google, it has no password — so Sign in with an email and password will refuse it with Invalid email or password. To set one, use Forgot your password? on the sign-in page: on an account with no password it quietly sets one for the first time. See Resetting your password.

The Google button in the creator app

The creator app’s Continue with Google does not sign you in there directly. It sends you to EVVA to sign in, and brings you back to finish setting up — the page says so: You will sign in on EVVA and come straight back to finish setting up. That is one account and one sign-in, not two.
