What payment methods can I use?
For fans — the three ways to pay, which purchases accept which, and how Google Pay fits in
Three ways to pay are available on EVVA: a card you type in, a card already saved from an earlier purchase, and your EVVA balance. Which ones you are offered depends on your account, your device and the item.
Typing a card
The card form takes your card number, expiry and CVC and sends them straight to the payment gateway’s own script in your browser. The number never reaches EVVA’s servers — the gateway hands back a one-use token, and that is what EVVA charges.
Typing a card also saves it and records your permission to charge it again later. See Saved cards and standing authorisation.
A card already on file
Once a card has been saved and a payment on it has been accepted at least once, EVVA offers it as a single press. The button names the card, for example Unlock Visa •••• 4471 · $7.00. If the saved method has no card digits, it reads “Unlock with your saved payment method”.
A card that was saved but whose first payment was declined is not offered this way. Offering it would only hand you a second press that declines the same way — so you are asked for card details instead.
One-click is not offered when starting a free trial. A trial needs the standing permission that only the typed-card path collects.
Your EVVA balance
If you hold an EVVA balance, the payment sheet lets you pay a paid post, a paid message or a tip from it. See Your EVVA balance for how money gets in, the 5,000.00 limits, and the fact that it cannot be taken back out.
Two things the balance cannot do:
- It cannot pay for a subscription. A subscription has to be paid with a saved card, because the renewal is charged when you are not there to approve it. Trying anything else is refused with “A subscription must be paid with a saved card”.
- It cannot pay to top itself up. Adding money to your balance is paid for with a card.
Google Pay
Where Google Pay is offered in the payment sheet, choose it and approve the payment in your wallet. The payment is then submitted against your order like any other, and the item or subscription opens once the payment provider confirms the money.
Whether the wallet is offered depends on your device and your browser. If you do not see it, type your card details instead.
What a subscription needs versus what a one-off needs
Managing a saved card
A card goes on file as a side effect of paying, and the button that offers a card on file always names the card it will charge, so you can see which one you are about to be charged on. If saving a card keeps failing
Saving a card is rate-limited to 10 attempts a minute, because each attempt spends a one-use token from the gateway. If you hit that, wait a minute before trying again. Other refusals are listed in When a payment does not go through.
