When a payment does not go through
For fans — what each refusal means, whether anything was taken, and what to do next
When EVVA refuses a payment, nothing has been charged. The messages below are the ones you can actually be shown, and what each one means for you.
Your card details were not accepted
“Those details were not accepted. Nothing was taken. Check them and try again.”
The payment gateway would not accept the card details as typed. Check the number, expiry date and security code and try again. EVVA does not receive a reason from the gateway and does not pass its wording on to you.
The payment could not be started
“This could not be started right now. Nothing was taken. Please try again.”
The card form could not run, and nothing was taken. Try again; if it still does not open, close the sheet and start the purchase again.
That card cannot be charged
A card on file is refused with “That instrument cannot be charged”. It covers an expired card and a card without the standing permission a charge needs, and EVVA does not distinguish between them.
The way forward is the same either way: pay by typing the card details in again, which saves the card and records the permission afresh. See Saved cards and standing authorisation.
A subscription must be paid with a saved card
A subscription cannot be paid from your EVVA balance. Renewals are charged when you are not present, so a card and its standing authorisation are required. Choose the card option in the sheet.
This order cannot be paid
The order is not in a payable state, or it is not yours. EVVA gives the same answer for both, so this message is not proof the order exists. Common reasons in practice: the order has already been paid, or it was cancelled.
If it is a Marketplace order you left unpaid, open it from the Marketplace orders list and complete the payment there.
You already have access to this content
Good news, not an error: the purchase already went through. Close the sheet and open the item. See Unlocking a paid post or message.
This item cannot be purchased right now
Variants of this cover a creator who cannot currently be paid for that item, content that is not actually for sale, and items that no longer exist, are unpublished, or live in someone else’s conversation. Nothing is charged. There is nothing to retry — the item is not buyable as things stand.
You cannot buy your own
“This is your own page — you cannot subscribe to yourself.” A creator cannot buy their own subscription, content or service.
The amount is out of range
- A tip: “A gift must be between 500.00.”
- A top-up: between 5,000.00.
- A creator’s own checkout: “That amount is outside the range this creator accepts. Please adjust it.” The page also tells you the range before you submit, for example “Enter at least $5.00.”
Amounts are refused, never quietly adjusted to something else.
An introductory offer you have already used
“This introductory offer has already been taken on this plan.” Nothing is charged, and you are not moved to the full price behind your back. Subscribe at the standard price if you want to go ahead.
The payment could not be started right now (503)
“The payment could not be started right now.” Something on the platform side could not complete the payment. Retry the same attempt — the sheet’s own retry is safe and resolves to the attempt already in flight rather than starting a second one.
Retry from the same sheet. Do not reload, go back and press a pay or subscribe button again — that is a new attempt, and it opens a second order with a second charge. Nothing on the platform refuses it, because both purchases are legitimate on their face.
Too many attempts
Payments are limited to 30 attempts a minute, and saving a card to 10 a minute. Over the limit you get a rate-limit response that tells you how many seconds to wait. Wait that long and try again.
Not enough in your balance
The balance shown to you is a reading, not money reserved. If something else spent from it in between, a payment from your balance can be refused for exceeding what the balance holds. Check the figure in the sheet and top up if you need to — see Your EVVA balance.
Nothing was refused, but nothing says paid either
That is how EVVA works, not a failure. An accepted payment shows as submitted or “on its way”, and the purchase completes when the payment provider confirms it. See How paying works on EVVA.
